Homemade Baby Food Recipes
I thought I would share some tried and true baby food recipes that Everly has loved. In the beginning I could get away with just blending up peas or carrots, but her pallet is expanding and she is wanting more variation and more flavor (who doesn't)! Every kid is different so experiment with the flavors to find out what your kid likes. We have tried giving Everly a fairly clean diet - no processed foods, no sugar, no unknown ingredients - which means I make most of her food. This way I know what is going in it and it is much cheaper than buying it from the store. It can be time consuming (especially since Everly is a bottomless pit), but I'm a stay-at-home mom so it's easy to find the time.
I didn't include directions because they would be repetitive. Basically if it's a puree or smoothie, blend it, and if not just mix it all together in a bowl. I also didn't really include pictures because, well, it looks like baby food. See below for a few of her favorite food combos!
Note: serving size will depend on how hungry your little one is. I freeze whatever she doesn't eat in small glass mason jars.
Oatmeal /Quinoa/Brown Rice Porridge
1 egg
1 1/2 cups of water
1/2 cup of steel cut oats (or sub quinoa or brown rice)
1 cup of pureed carrot (I have also used butternut squash, sweet potato or any other puree on hand)
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp vanilla
Optional add-ins: nut butter, coconut oil, ground flaxseed
Directions: Combine egg and water in a small pot over low heat and whisk together. Add in the rest of the ingredients and continue to whisk and cook over low heat until the oats are cooked and the mixture thickens. Add more/less water as needed.
Chickpea Puree
2 cups chickpeas (I use dry beans, soak them overnight and then cook them)
1 - 1.5 cups of bone broth (we make our own, but if you buy it make sure it's actual bone broth and not stock)
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp paprika
Beet Puree
2 roasted beets
1 green apple, peeled and diced
1/3 cup frozen pineapple or frozen blueberries
1/2 - 3/4 cup water
Fruit & Veggie Puree
2 cups mixed frozen veggies (green beans, squash, carrots)
1 cup frozen fruit (peaches, strawberries, bananas)
1 cup of water
Green Smoothie
1 cup water
1 cup packed spinach
1/2 cup frozen berries
Almond Flour Mixture
1/4 cup almond flour
1/4 cup plain unsweetened kefir
1 tsp peanut butter
1 tbs chia jam
water to reach desired consistency
Coconut "Porridge"
3 tbs coconut flour
3 tbs canned coconut milk
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 - 3/4 cups water
Quinoa & Veggies
1 cup cooked quinoa (we cook ours in bone broth for added nutrients and flavor)
1/2 tsp garlic
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/2 cup roasted broccoli florets, diced
1/2 cup tomatoes, diced
Food Combos
These aren't recipes, but these are other things she likes eating (mostly on her own, she's big into finger foods these days):
Diced chicken dipped in my Vegan Pesto
Full fat Greek yogurt with Chia Jam and 100% natural peanut butter
Homemade applesauce
Natural peanut butter and chia jam on a piece of sprouted bread
Bananas
Green pea rotini with organic marinara sauce
Cut up steamed sweet potato or carrots
Eggs cooked in butter with sharp cheddar cheese
Diced tomatoes and mozzarella cheese
Homemade fruit & veggie bars (I'll be sharing the recipe soon!)
Everly is always fighting me for the spoon these days, all she wants to do is feed herself. Some days I feel like I have no creativity and no idea what to feed her. Some days she's also really picky and would probably just eat peanut butter if I let her. Let me know below if there are any combos your little ones like. I can take all the help I can get, feeding a baby feels like a full-time job sometimes!
Best,
Stacey
