Kitchen Remodel | Before & After

When we first looked at this house, I knew the kitchen needed a major makeover. It was in a tiny little closed off space, with old dark brown cabinets and no appliances (see below). The backsplash tile was chipped and cracking and everything was original 1970's. Jason wanted to do as much as he could himself, but we obviously outsourced where we had to. I knew I wanted a white kitchen with black hardware to keep it bright and open. I met with S7 Design in the beginning to help me pick out the countertop, cabinet color, and paint color for our house. I wanted to make sure that they would all work together and wouldn't clash. She was so helpful and has great taste! I highly recommend her if you need guidance on design.

CUSTOM CABINETS

We decided to go with Springfield Woodworking to build our cabinets, and then Jason and his friend installed them. We were limited in our space and basically had to go with the existing footprint of the kitchen. To get the most of the space we knew custom cabinets was the way to go. We were able to knock down the wall that was there, and thankfully it wasn't load bearing so we didn't have to add a post or a beam. It opened up our main living space, which is what I wanted with the girls. There was also a small closet in the kitchen that we closed up so that we could have more storage at the backdoor for shelving. I'm so glad we did that! We were able to customize everything, from our built-in pantry, to our soft-close cabinets, to the cabinet color and pull style. We went with Sherwin Williams Decorators White for the color, because I didn't want too creamy or too bright white and this was the perfect warm white. We got a shaker style cabinet that went right to the ceiling to give them a modern feel and get the most storage we could. I love the simple cylindrical pull we got to keep the lines clean. I knew we needed a big pantry style cabinet because we didn't have anywhere else to store our food. We built that beside the fridge and I love how it turned out. It has so much space and it is our most used cupboard. Then we went with a counter-depth fridge. I love how it's flush with our counters, and still gives us a ton of space for food. We got all GE appliances, and our microwave has to be my favorite appliance! I love that the handle is hidden and it's so big.

FLOATING SHELVES & BACKSPLASH

I also really wanted floating shelves in our kitchen somewhere, so we added some to the right of the back window. We got them made out of knotty pine by WF Contracting and stained them ourselves in Old Masters Dark Walnut. I love how they turned out! Jason did the backsplash, and we used a 4x12 Ceratec Surfaces Glamour Calacatta tile from A&R Tile. I originally thought I wanted 3x6 white subway tile, but changed my mind because I thought it was being overdone in kitchens. I went back and forth between tile choices and finally decided on this marble looking tile. I LOVE how it turned out so much. I still love subway tile, and ended up doing it in the girls bathroom so that I could have it somewhere in the house! We also added this gorgeous print from Rachelou Art who makes beautiful custom pieces. I love how it completes this space and fills our blank wall.

COUNTERTOPS, FAUCET & SINK

We wanted Quartz countertops because they're basically indestructible. We went with Radianz in Everest White. I wanted something white but with a subtle fleck. We also went with squared corners for a modern look. We got them from Solid Stone, and their customer service was great. Our faucet is the Greenwich Pull Down Single Handle Faucet by VIGO, which I ordered from Wayfair. I love the big arch and that it has a pull down handle. We also went with one big sink without dividers and it's seriously my favorite thing. We can fit big pots and pans and it just has so much room to do dishes. I would never go back to a two section sink again. It's so easy doing dishes now! We got the 30x18 undermount sink by Kraus.

ISLAND & STOOLS

Our island is my favorite thing that we were able to add. It added so much counterspace and cabinets for storage. The island is 84" x 40". Our pendant lights above the island are Finnick 1-Light Geometric Pendants from Wayfair. We decided on 3 going across, and I think it works perfectly. Our paint color in the kitchen is the same as the main living area, which is Crushed Ice by Sherwin Williams. Our island stools are from Wayfair and comfier than the look! They're heavy with metal bases, but I just put little felt pads under them so they don't scratch the floors.
